MicroStrategy Thinks Big and Prepares for the Future

Taking place at the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore Resort, MicroStrategy World 2014 attracted over 2,400 people, about 50 partners and vendors, and dozens of industry analysts. The buzz was palpable. 

Big brands. Big speakers. Big announcements. The last week of January 2014 was a big week in MicroStrategy history.

Taking place at the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore Resort, MicroStrategy World 2014 attracted over 2,400 people, about 50 partners and vendors, and dozens of industry analysts. The buzz was palpable.

Here are just a few reasons people are still talking about it.

  • MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor kicked off the event with a look at the future. He laid out his vision for how technology will be driven by four factors: analytics, mobility, loyalty, and identity. He introduced PRIME, a MicroStrategy product that raises the bar 100x over existing OLAP services. It serves seven times more users and performs three times faster than the next in-memory solution available.

  • Gucci executives Simone Pacciarini (World Wide MIS Director) and Marcello Vignocchi (Innovative Solutions Director) captivated the crowd with a customer engagement demo that combines the Usher identity and MicroStrategy Mobile platforms. The result takes customer service to an unprecedented level. From the moment a customer uses an app to take a picture of a product — whether from a magazine or store display — Gucci is prepared to peak his interest. In the recorded keynote below, see how that quick picture is turned into a list of Gucci products, complete with purchase information and wish-listing options. The customer is then recognized by a touchscreen billboard, receives personal attention with custom messaging, and is recognized by in-store associates. Fans of Minority Report will recognize this idea.
  • MicroStrategy’s Pedro Arellano hammered home the value of self-service analytics. In his address, he flexed the muscle behind Analytics Desktop visualization for the crowd, showing how Canada has potential to dominate the winter Olympics in Sochi (yeah, he drew some cheers from the small but dedicated contingent of Canadians in the crowd). And even more memorable than the unexpected country factors he associated with sports excellence, Pedro outed himself as a closet curling fan.
  • On Day 2, MicroStrategy’s Hugh Owen announced the latest in the long list of Ventana Research awards for MicroStrategy Mobile. He then detailed the complete redesign of the MicroStrategy Mobile app for iOS7. Watch Hugh “bring sexy back” to mobile with this presentation featuring a long list of eye-catching widgets and features in this latest platform version.  
  • Closing off the keynotes on Day 2, Northrop Grumman Director Royce Kincaid wowed the crowd with a project that will “literally save lives.” He detailed the FirstNet Iniative the company is building for first responders across the country. In a track session that followed his address, he explained how this program is made possible by using the capabilities of the Usher Identity Platform. It was clear to everyone that there are big changes ahead.

On the final day, MicroStrategy World 2014 wrapped up with a bang. The final track sessions in the morning were followed by the confidential Technology Futures presentations hosted by Peng Xiao and his team. They outlined where our products will be evolving to better serve our customers — and that drew several rounds of applause.

My favorite highlight from the last sessions was most certainly the energizing discussion from mobile BI evangelist Dwayne Washington (Dallas Fort Worth Airport). Dwayne knew how to work a crowd, and his energizing and insightful arguments on bridging the natural gaps that form between business units and  IT are a must-watch for people across roles and industries.
